Finding the right type of graphic design software isn't a complicated process; however, it does need careful deliberation. The main question to be asked is what specific tasks are you expecting to do with your software?
Graphic design has been around since the times of the cave paintings in the mountains of Lascaux. Although the term “graphic design” itself was coined in the 20th century, the idea of graphic design has been around almost as long as human beings have.
The term “graphic design” pertains to the process of communicating visually. Text, pictures and symbols are used to convey ideas, promote messages and give information. The current definition of graphic design includes using the skill of typography, page layout and image development. Since people started using the internet, graphic design has been referred to as interactive design or multimedia design.
There are a lot of different types of graphic design software available on the market, and some of them are better suited for accomplishing specific tasks. Graphic design software is fundamentally the same as desktop publishing software.
The more popular types of desktop publishing software deal with graphics and web design. These programs are used when creating and working with PDF formats and different software tools. There are also types that specialize in producing creative printing and home publishing.
Few desktop publishers are able to actually do all the tasks needed by graphic designers when making a project. There are four general subgroups under desktop publishers, each one able to tackle efficiently the specific tasks the software was designed for. These four subcategories are as follows:
- Word Processors: Word processors are used to type and edit text. Two of the word processor's features include spell check and the grammar check. Although there are some advanced layouts that can be done using the word processor, it works best just editing and simply working with words. When choosing a word processor, make sure that it is compatible with other software and can import or export different formats.
- Graphics Software: There are two types that you can choose from. The first type of software specializes in logos and illustrations. These programs work with vector graphic formats. While the next type specializes in Photo/Image Editing. This type of software has bitmap graphic tools and works with photos and scans and other “realistic” images.
- Page Layout Software: These types of software work by creating layouts for magazines, newspaper layouts or webpage layouts.
- Electronic/Web Publishing: You need this type if you wish to produce or work with PDF files or websites.
