The Art of Garden Design

Creating a beautiful garden is not as simple as it looks. It takes a lot of planning and landscape arranging but it has its benefits. A beautiful garden not only ties in the infrastructure, commercial or residential, but also increases property value. The process of designing the layout and creating a harmonious atmosphere between the outdoors (the garden) and the indoors is called garden design.

In the twentieth century, more and more garden owners are calling on garden designers to create for them the perfect garden. Garden designers are very skilled not only in design, but also in horticulture. They know the different types of plants and they know how to use these plants to create the owner’s desired look and feel. They are concerned with the whole landscape layout, the water features, sitting areas and the decking.

There are several things to consider before proceeding with garden design. First, look at the garden's location. Different locations usually have different types of soil conducive for growing different kinds of plants. It is important to have a suitable microclimate for the plants to grow. Apart from this, being near a water source is good for plants that need a lot of watering.

Some of the elements of garden design include:

Good lighting: Lighting is essential for plants since plants require direct light for growth to aid in the photosynthesis of the plants. Lighting is usually classified by heights: safety lighting, downlighting and uplighting.

Good Soil: Conditioning the soil is also a must to help plants grow. Once excavated, it is important to replace the topsoil and the subsoil.

Boundaries: Creating the right boundary line can enhance the look of a garden. Sometimes plants themselves are used to create the boundary. If breaking up the garden is the intended look, boundaries can be created in the form of hedges or by using shrubbery to create the illusion.

Hedges: Hedges are used primarily to create sections within the garden. The danger of using hedges lies in how the hedges can use up nutrients and moisture from the soil, making the other plants less healthy than they should be.

Walls and Fencing: Stone walls, brick walls and concrete walls can act as separators for the different regions in the garden. Finding the right type of wall for the garden is very important. Fences, on the other hand, can be used to protect the plants from animals or shelter the plant from violent winds. This can also act as the divider between regions.

Garden Furniture: Garden furniture like benches and dining sets can help set the mood for the garden. Most garden furniture is made of wood, but metal furniture is also used. The advantage of metal furniture is that it is more durable than wood.

Water: Spigots and pipes can help ensure that soil is kept moist to help with the growth of the plants.
